Class Mark () of Grouped Data
Class Mark () of Grouped Data
Calculates the class mark (mid-point) for a given class interval.
Derivation
This represents the exact mid-point of the class interval, acting as the mathematical representative for all observations falling within that class.
Component Anatomy:
- Upper Limit: The maximum boundary of the specific continuous class interval.
- Lower Limit: The minimum boundary of the specific continuous class interval.
Boundary Conditions / Domain:
- Mandatory first step for calculating the mean of grouped frequency distributions. Assumes the frequency of a class is perfectly centered at its mid-point.
- Class intervals must be continuous before calculation if not already.

Mean of Grouped Data: Direct Method
Mean of Grouped Data: Direct Method
Calculates the Mean of grouped data using direct multiplication of frequencies and class marks.
Derivation
Algorithmic SOP:
- Calculate the class mark for each interval.
- Multiply each by its corresponding frequency .
- Sum all the products ().
- Divide by the total frequency ().
Component Anatomy:
- : The arithmetic mean.
- : The frequency of the class.
- : The class mark (mid-point) of the class.
- : Total number of observations ().
Boundary Conditions / Domain:
- Best applied strictly when the numerical values of and are small, making direct multiplication computationally easy.
- (Total frequency must be greater than zero).

Algebraic Deviation () in Assumed Mean Method
Algebraic Deviation () in Assumed Mean Method
Defines the algebraic deviation used to simplify calculations in the Assumed Mean Method.
Derivation
Simplifies variance of large class marks by shifting the origin to a central assumed mean ''.
Component Anatomy:
- : Deviation of the specific class mark from the assumed mean.
- : Class mark (mid-point) of the interval.
- : Assumed Mean (an arbitrarily chosen central class mark).
Boundary Conditions / Domain:
- Will yield exactly for the class containing the assumed mean .
- Will yield strictly negative values for classes below and positive for classes above .
