Ch 08 - A Journey through States of Water6th Science
Properties of the Solid State
Describe the physical properties of water in its solid state (Ice) regarding shape and flow.
Describe the physical properties of water in its solid state (Ice) regarding shape and flow.
CONCEPT
- Shape: Fixed. A solid retains its specific shape irrespective of the container it is placed in.
- Volume: Fixed.
- Flow: Solids do not flow or spread outwards.
- Example: An ice cube maintains its rigid cubic shape whether it sits in a cup, a bowl, or on a flat plate.

Solid = Stubborn Shape
Properties of the Liquid State
How does liquid water behave fundamentally regarding shape and volume?
How does liquid water behave fundamentally regarding shape and volume?
CONCEPT
- Shape: Not Fixed. Liquids possess no inherent shape and will naturally contour to take the shape of the container they are poured into.
- Volume: Fixed. The physical amount of space the liquid occupies remains constant (e.g., 1 Litre of water remains exactly 1 Litre whether in a tall bottle or a wide bucket).
- Flow: Liquids flow and spread easily over surfaces.
Prism Memory Hook
Liquid = Lazy Shape, Loyal Volume
Properties of the Gaseous State
What are the unique physical properties of water in its gaseous state (Water Vapour)?
What are the unique physical properties of water in its gaseous state (Water Vapour)?
CONCEPT
- Shape: Not Fixed.
- Volume: Not Fixed. Gases expand dynamically.
- Spreading: Gases naturally spread out in all directions to fill the entire available space of any container or room.
- Visibility Note: Pure water vapour is a completely invisible gas. (The white 'steam' we often see is actually condensed liquid droplets, not gas).
