Mechanical Pressure
Mechanical Pressure
State the fundamental formula for Pressure, relating it to Force and the Area over which it is applied.
Variables & Units:
- P = Pressure in Pascal (Pa) or N/m²
- F = Force in Newtons (N)
- A = Area in Square metres (m²)
Conditions/Notes:
- This formula specifically considers forces that act perpendicular to the surface.
- Inverse Relationship: For a constant force, decreasing the area increases the pressure.
Prism Memory Hook
Pressure is Force over Area (PFA).
Meteorological Units of Air Pressure
While the SI unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa), what are the two practical measurement units heavily used by meteorologists to track air pressure, and what is their exact conversion to Pascals?
While the SI unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa), what are the two practical measurement units heavily used by meteorologists to track air pressure, and what is their exact conversion to Pascals?
The two practical units are the Millibar (mb) and the Hectopascal (hPa).
Conversion Rates:
- 1 mb = 100 Pa
- 1 hPa = 100 Pa
Note: Because they share the same conversion rate to Pascals, 1 mb is exactly equal to 1 hPa.

Atmospheric Pressure
Define 'Atmospheric Pressure' and explain the physical mechanism that creates it.
Define 'Atmospheric Pressure' and explain the physical mechanism that creates it.
Definition: Atmospheric Pressure is the downward pressure exerted by the sheer weight of the air column surrounding the Earth.
Origin: The Earth is entirely surrounded by a thick envelope of atmospheric gases (including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide). The physical mass of this towering column of air is constantly being pulled down toward the surface by Earth's gravity, which generates a continuous pressure on all objects.
