Anatomy and Primary Refraction
What is the approximate diameter of the human eyeball, and what are the respective roles of the Cornea and Crystalline Lens in focusing light?
What is the approximate diameter of the human eyeball, and what are the respective roles of the Cornea and Crystalline Lens in focusing light?
- Eyeball Diameter: Approximately 2.3 cm in a healthy adult.
- Cornea: A thin, transparent membrane bulging on the front. It performs the vast majority of light refraction as light passes from the air into the denser medium of the eye.
- Crystalline Lens: A fibrous, jelly-like structure inside the eye. It provides only the finer focal adjustments required to clearly focus objects at varying distances onto the retina.

Light Regulation: Iris and Pupil
How do the Iris and Pupil work synergistically to optimize vision in dynamically varying light conditions?
How do the Iris and Pupil work synergistically to optimize vision in dynamically varying light conditions?
- Iris: A dark, muscular diaphragm located behind the cornea.
- Pupil: The central adjustable aperture within the iris (appearing strictly black because no light escapes it).
- Mechanism: The iris dynamically controls the size of the pupil. In bright light, the iris contracts the pupil to reduce light entry, protecting the retina from phototoxic damage. In dim light, it dilates (expands) the pupil to maximize light entry and visual acuity.

Aqueous vs. Vitreous Humour
Distinguish between the Aqueous Humour and Vitreous Humour based on their anatomical locations and physical states.
Distinguish between the Aqueous Humour and Vitreous Humour based on their anatomical locations and physical states.
- Aqueous Humour: A watery, low-viscosity fluid filling the anterior chamber strictly between the cornea and the crystalline eye lens.
- Vitreous Humour: A dense, transparent, jelly-like matrix filling the much larger posterior chamber strictly between the crystalline lens and the retina.
Prism Memory Hook
A comes before V: Aqueous is anterior (front), Vitreous is posterior (back).
